Subsurface Utility Engineering

In 1997, CobbFendley was the first Texas-owned firm selected by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to perform Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) on a statewide contract.

This scientific approach of designating and locating existing utilities produces detailed information for advanced planning and budget projections. Using nondestructive techniques, SUE engineers identify potential conflicts among the various utilities and future designs. SUE is an essential element in the planning process as it reduces incidents of lost service and/or lives caused by cut cables or damaged pipelines.

SUE services can include four levels:

Level D
Compile a drawing of all utilities based on the records.
Level C
Take the drawings generated in Level D for an on-site observation to resolve any conflicts between the records and utility indicators discovered.
Level B
Physically designate all underground utilities using non-destructive geophysical techniques.
Level A
Expose the underground utilities to obtain horizontal and vertical information. Restore surface to original condition.
